Ruglud's Armoured Orcs: Orctober

Another month another challenge. This month being Orctober means I get to revisit my collection of 3rd Edition Citadel Orcs and usually I choose a few nice ones, perhaps from my Goblinoids Combat Card project to ensure that I am get to complete a task I set myself for the month.

This time around I've decided to go big on numbers and actually try and complete a larger task, which in this case is Rugluds Armoured orcs. It may well fall flat when I get mired in painting too many of the same miniature, but I can have a go.
Here they are:
Pretty much ready to paint. Tonight I will do some basic greenstuff sculpts on their shields and prime them over the weekend so I can start batch painting. I'm probably looking at working in groups of 4 or 5 initially as I have 20 of the bastards to paint.
Wish me luck in keeping my motivation!

They really are a cool unit though, I own the box too and love reading the background information on them:

Citadel Combat Cards: Goblinoids

It was always going to happen; constructing a Warhammer 3rd Edition Orc and Goblin Army, similar to the one I collected as a teenager in the 80's and sold as an adult in the 2000's. Upon my re-introduction to the hobby, I'd started to collect the odd Goblinoid model for my Lost and the Damned Retinue project (Orcs and Goblins) and then this slowly grew to more of a warband and now the next step is to grow it into a full scale army using the same classic models that I once owned.

But to make the collecting aspect more interesting (and more difficult) I recently purchased the Citadel Combat Cards, Goblinoid edition with the aim of collecting those specific greenskins first to add some additional models to the growing horde. Now I'm not one to do things on a total whim, a fair bit of research is always conducted first. An initial scour of eBay gave me hope in that there are a lot of O&G classic models being sold there and for decent prices too. A secondary search for others who may have undertaken a similar task bought me to Fimms BlogSpot where he had actually completed the task in it's entirety (although I'm unsure whether he's painted them all yet). Using his own research I have discovered that some of the Snotlings are very rare, that one Goblin has been heavily converted by Kev Adams and that some of the models have been mirrored when photographed to provide a better fit within the combat card composition.

So rather than collect them all first as he has, I'm going to collect and paint along the way, which will hopefully give me ample time to complete the project (it took him 3 years just to source the minis!). I already have a few of the required models painted up (my rule here is: the model must be the same, but painted and based in my own style to fit in with the previously painted greenskins). So the first three completed models:

And then with their respective cards:

To end this post I should say that I've now got this additional idea that I'll eventually combine my photos with the same combat card template (any suggestions on how to do this easily?) to create my own card system (as the amazing Nico has here for Frostgrave) and finally, if anyone has any of the models from the set, I'd be very interested in buying or trading (especially these pesky, rare Snotlings:

Tutorial: Orc skin painting guide

I thought I'd offer another painting tutorial as a few people have mentioned my Orc and Goblin Army and the recipe I used to make browny/green Orcs. Here's an example of an Orc Shaman I painted a few years back:
Image

And here are the steps to get there:

Image
1. The converted model ready for painting.

Image
2. Primed black, with Graveyard Earth basecoat. I now use Baneblade Brown which is a silmilar coloured brown.

Image
3. Apply a very dilute Brown Ink wash (I now use Aggorax Earthshade). Re-apply Graveyard Earth over the areas which are to be highlighted, i.e those that are raised.

Image
4. Two/three highlights of Graveyard Earth < Rotting Flesh. I still have some Rotting Flesh, but perhaps Nurgling Green would be a substitute? I thin my paints so that they are transluscent enough to leave some of the underlying colour to show through. This helps "blend" the subsequent layers easily.

Image
5. Apply a very dilute Green Ink wash (with a touch of washing up liquid mixed in to help the flow).

Image
6. Re-work some of the extreme highlights if needed.

Image
7. And finishing up with the details. Adding some Gloss Varnish to under the nose, in the eyes and inside mouth to make them look wet.  Some very dilute Elf Flesh to the lips (sometimes I add this to the end of the nose and on the cheeks too to give a slightly ruddy complexion). And a highlighted purple tongue.

8. The finished model. Ta da!

So if you've got some unpainted Orcs in your paint queue and you're tempted to avoid the usual Greenskin colour recipes, try this out and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Orctoberfest - my last O&G army

Erny's excellent Orctober plan (http://ernysplace.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/orctober.html) has given me an opportunity to show off my old (2006?) Orc and Goblin army that I linked to in my last post. But rather than have you troll through lots of pages in a link, I thought I'd share the models on here, seeing as this is my little part of the web an all.

I've only ever "completed" two armies, this being the second one, but both of which were of the O&G variety and both of which have since been sold on :(. So forgive my indulgence but I'd quite like to show them off here:

Warboss Azbo:

Even before I knew of "Oldhammer" I was rockin' old school shield designs.

And here is after all the converting, greenstuffing and kitbashing. He was huge....

My BSB, Garthong the Angry:

Shaman, Ummblatt:

Shaman, Ahhwhizz:

The Black Orcs

The Big Uns:

The Boyz:

Chariots:

Night Goblins:

Wolfboyz:

Scratchbuilt rocklobba:

Ansd some army shots of the boyz together:

That feels better and partly sates my desire to share my love and connections with all things Orc, which seems to be a good reason for Orctober.

So expect all my posts this month to be focused on the Greenskins as I move from my past relationship with into my future dealings with them (albeit using models from the past..) I'm resisting the urge to say Waa.....
