Level 15 Sorcerer (205pts)

So I felt that my collection of models (an
So I felt that my collection of models (an army?) needed a leader, so I dusted of this converted sorcerer on a Palanquin raised by Nurglings. I've jumped between Warhammer Armies and the Lost and the Damned here, choosing a Level 15 sorcerer profile (155)  from the former and giving him the palanquin (50) a free (ridiculously) Staff of Nurgle from the latter.

The main part of the model, the palanquin, is of course the classic Citadel version, unadulterated, but I didn't really like any of the riders that came with it (I have him going spare) so created my own from some plastic zombie and chaos bits and greenstuff for the cloth.

The staff of Nurgle uses one of those Beastmen heads from the sprue on a plastic spear. Here's more on what appears to be quite a potent staff:

The wormpile model I shared in my warband post is perfect to represent the remains of the failed magic test model.

So with this sorcerer leading the masses the total now equates to a current total of 2995pts which seems like a good opportunity to take a group shot of a 3000pt army:

Much more to come though....

Chaos Allied Contingent Commander

As I embark on a huge painting marathon, I decided to break the load into more manageable portions. I''m starting with a Chaos Allies Contingent from Warhammer Armies 3rd Edition and the first models to be introduced to the brush and paint are a Contingent Commander and his familiar.

The contingent will be made up of Minotaurs, Chaos Dwarfs and Centaurs, so the book stipulates that only a Chaos Sorcerer can lead such an eclectic band of races.  Now I love the little illustrations in the Warhammer Armies book so I decided to use the illustration for the Sorcerer as inspiration and procured the necessary models to recreate it.

Here's my attempt using the Prisma app to try and transform and replicate the style of the illustration from the photograph of my completed Commander and Familiar:

Retinue Table : D4 Cultists (plus a Magus Warrior/Sorcerer)

One of my favourite options on the LatD Retinue table, is the D4 Chaos Cultists (with option to be led by a Chaos Sorcerer or a Chaos Warrior). There is so much potential with this as I can imagine the cultists in the midst of a human population, covert and looking to recruit further cultists to the cause of the Chaos God. Perhaps these Cultists have some hidden deformity, that outcasts them from ordinary society but that may lead them to follow a particular Chaos Deity. Or maybe they have just have Chaotic tendencies in their thoughts or personality that would draw them to becoming  a cultist.

In terms of model choice it was an absolute shoe-in that I would be using the Disciples of the Red Redmption for my cultists. Oldhammer to the core with their hooded capes and distinctive masks, they were perfect for the role. So I rounded up one plain disciple, one drummer, one standard bearer and one champion. For the Magus or Warrior I had to do a bit more thinking. I wanted to retain the hooded and possibly masked theme (they need to hide their identity from the public to a degree too, and in the end plumped for the jester like Sorcerer (very much fitting in with the theme of the Nurgle Carnival) and for the warrior, the iconic Goodwin model with jezzail. Mainly because it's such a damn cool model, even though it does not really fit my original fluff. Hardly a discreet weapon.

I painted the robes in my Orc skin colour, I wanted them to be drab but with a hint of green and decided to retain the green colouring in the corrosion on the brass masks. The idea being that these hints of green would complement the reddish skin of the models.

For the banner bearer I did my usual perusal of my growing Fighting Fantasy collection of books and found a great illustration by Bob Harvey from the Talisman of Death that perfectly fits in with this idea of the hooded cultists trying to reach out and recruit you:

So I freehanded a copy of this onto a very small surface:

I plan to extend these 6 models into a unit of diseased flagellants in the future, as per the LatD Nurgle Army list. I've been inspired by this image:

And have a bucket load of plastic flagellants, hounds and even a screaming bell somewhere to make it happen... probably a long time in the future....

Back catalogue - Beastman Shaman

Over on papanurgle.com a while ago there was a fun Realms of Chaos build your own warband project. Most of the models I constructed for it have been incorporated into this blog already (including some beastmen), but I also rolled up this beastman shaman with a flaming skull head and Nurgle's rot.

So the basis for the model is a metal plaguebearer, with the addiction of beastmen legs and a selection of bits from the empire wizard spruce. I draped a very thin greenstuff robe over his body and created a swamp base with slate and some silicon bubbles as I've described in a previous blog entry. I wanted to create the idea that he was casting a spell from the book where the hourglass is actually rising from the tome.
Below is the final painted version:

I wanted the roses and the flaming skull to contrast against the drab browns and dark bloody reds of his gut and scythe and I followed a tutorial regarding painting the hourglass. Enjoy!

Retinue Table: Chaos Sorcerer

For my Chaos Sorcerer I've decided to use what was officially a Chaos Warrior when released, but which I think fits the Nurgle Sorcerer well; I see him as dabbling in the dark arts of Necromancy as much as the Lore of Nurgle.

Such a nice miniature to paint (even though the pose is slightly awkward) and I love the Nurgle marking on his head and the decaying skin on the left side of his head. There's also some dripping blood (or poison) sculpted onto his sword.

I've gone for a yellow skin tone here to make him look as diseased as possible, lots of yellow washes over a white basecoat and then some brown and black glazes to make the skin look as disgusting as possible. Finally followed by some Tamiya clear red and purple, red, black washes for the blood:
